World Metrology Day: AFTCFTA and EPA at the centre of concern

On the occasion of the memorial ceremony in Yaoundé today, the various actors discussed the impact of Metrology on World Trade.

"The government should put in place a strong system so that the application of regulations and standards does not become a technical barrier to trade, with a view to protecting producers and consumers, in view of the gradual dismantling of trade barriers, in this case the implementation of the EPA and the AFCFTA". This is the proposal of Pr Brusil Miranda Metou the Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade made this 07 August 2020 in Yaoundé, on the occasion of the commemorative ceremony of this Edition.

Among the main focus of this celebration, which focused on "measures for World Trade", were presentations by the Directorate of foreign trade on the presentation of the AFCFTA, and by the Directorate of Metrology, quality and prices. According to the representative of the trade boss Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana: "the goal of the celebration is to promote the important role that measures play in facilitating fair world trade, ensuring the compliance of products with standards and regulations, and satisfying customers' expectations of quality ".

The commemoration follows the signing of the Metre convention on 20 May 1875, a convention ratified in 1970 by Cameroon. The celebration coincided with the coronavirus pandemic, which requires states to review their trade in goods and services. For this reason, the mobilized actors analyzed the challenges of Metrology in this context of health crisis and prompted a reflection on the contribution to the dynamics of emergence of the Cameroonian economy.
The experts are unanimous that thanks to this science, Cameroon will be able to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area, whose fundamental mission is to boost trade between African countries, through the elimination or even reduction of tariff and non-tariff barriers, to put an end to the paradoxes of an Africa that is full of huge natural resources ...but also an Africa whose many countries depend on the exports of raw materials, no added value and are therefore exposed to the recurring deterioration of the terms of trade.

The challenges of Metrology in this period of health crisis have been reviewed , since the launch of activities last August 04 through a conference-debate organized by the Ministry of Trade at the National School of Administration and Judiciary-ENAM for the benefit of students of cycles A and B of the Section prices, weights and measures. The various activities organized in prelude to the celebration, have shown that the importance of Metrology in the life of consumers is more than ever proven.
